Located in Lamphun, between an hour and an hour and a half of driving times from Chiang Mai, the Gold Canyon Golf Course is a bit farther flung than the other courses in the area. It's also one where the focus is put squarely on your round of golf, with no resort hotel on the premises and a lack of certain other amenities such as a driving range. There is a restaurant on the course, for winding down after a round of golf. For the most part, though, golfers come to the Gold Canyon Golf Course to play affordable golf.

Indeed, due to the lack of extra amenities and the comparatively long distance from Chiang Mai, the Gold Canyon Golf Course is typically not considered the top golf course in the area. If you are willing to make the drive, though, that fact can work to your advantage. Because of its more middle-of-the-pack reputation, the Gold Canyon Golf Course offers cheaper rates for a round of golf than many of the other courses in the Chiang Mai area. For novices looking to build up their skills or hobbyists who want to play golf every day or multiple times in a week, the Gold Canyon Golf Course offers an excellent balance of price and quality of play.

Do be aware that the affordability and off-the-beaten-path nature of the Gold Canyon Golf Course also makes it an attractive choice for large golf tour groups. As a result, even though Golf Canyon is not one of the top-ranked courses in Chiang Mai, it can sometimes be difficult to get a tee time. In other words, make sure to call the clubhouse ahead of time, so you can check how busy the course is before making the lengthy trek.

In spite of it's surrounding canyons and mountain views, Gold Canyon Golf Course offers a course layout of surprisingly flat terrain. Most of the holes themselves are not hilly—though the treks between the greens and the tees for the next hole can be lengthy and do often take golfers through the more undulating terrain. If you choose to walk the course, Gold Canyon can provide a great workout.

The Gold Canyon Golf Course also offers a healthy mix of more leisurely holes and more challenging ones. The back nine is substantially more difficult than the front nine, with thicker grass, more water hazards, and other factors that should challenge even experienced golfers to stay on their game. You can also vary the difficulty factor even more in choosing your tees. A standard round at Gold Canyon Golf Course is 6,666 yards for the full 18 holes. Shooting from the black tees, though, you'll extend that distance to 7,329 yards—a major challenge if you still hope to make the par of 72 strokes!
